LifeLock Identity Theft Protection for families

How can LifeLock protect my kids and family?

Children make ideal targets for identity thieves. Children will usually not have any credit records and, because they will not be establishing their own credit for many years, any instance of credit-related identity theft can go undetected for quite some time. Children comprise the fastest growing segment of identity theft victims, accounting for up to 500,000 cases per year. Children continue to total 5% of all FTC reported identity theft. Thieves can obtain personal information in many places including doctor’s offices, schools, and by hacking into online profiles. Armed with the necessary information, thieves can fraudulently open bank, credit card and utility accounts, falsely obtain a job and then evade paying taxes using a child’s stolen identity. Dealing with child identity theft after it happens is extremely difficult. Laws in many states are insufficient to handle the crime’s complexity, and financial institutions are often less than helpful. Consequences for children can be real and damaging, such as difficulty getting into college and getting school loans, inability to apply for a driver’s license, receiving collections notices, and having an arrest warrant out in the child’s name. So it pays to take steps to protect your children now.

Guard your child’s future credit worthiness and their good name. Save time, effort and worry. LifeLock works to protect your children as well as yourself. It’s easy to enroll and inexpensive to add a child membership to your account. Most children do not have a credit history file. Nevertheless, we’ll attempt to place fraud alerts on his or her behalf, and, if a credit file is found to match, we will reset fraud alerts every 90 days. This should let you know when someone else is trying to open new lines or extension of credit in your child’s name. If a credit file is not found to match upon requesting the child’s fraud alert, then we will check every 180 days to be sure this is still the case. Plus, our $1 Million Total Service Guarantee is in full effect. Should it be needed, we will pay for the services of professionals as well as valid damages incurred, up to $1 million per lifetime. Among things we do:

  • We will request fraud alerts to be placed on the child’s credit file with the major credit reporting agencies.
  • If a credit file is found to match, we will renew fraud alerts every 90 days to keep them active.
  • We will request a credit report from the major credit reporting agencies on an annual basis.*
  • If a credit file is not found to match, then we will reconfirm every 180 days that this is the case.
  • Once a year, we will send you a form for you to request a copy of the child’s Earnings Report from the Social Security Administration. You will then be responsible for submitting this request to the Social Security Administration.**
  • With WalletLock, we will help cancel or replace cards if the child’s wallet is ever lost or stolen.

*Extra precaution with your child’s personal information – We request that any credit reports sent out to your child contain a partially masked SSN, so that we continue to keep your sensitive personal information secure.

**Simplifying your role – we cannot request the SSA for your child’s Earning Report, because it involves asking for more information on your child to which only you have access.
